I vis\u00adit\u00aded Magna Chrome (http:\/\/magnachrome.com<\/a>) recent\u00adly in their Con\u00adcord, Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia facil\u00adi\u00adty to inves\u00adti\u00adgate how they make met\u00adal prints.<\/p>\n

The process is an inter\u00adest\u00ading one. They first print the photo\u2019s reverse image on a 5\u2011ft wide Epson print\u00ader on spe\u00adcial paper with spe\u00adcial ink. Then they take the sheet of paper to a heat-press where they place the met\u00adal plate (alu\u00adminum) over it. The press com\u00adpress\u00ades the print and the plate under one ton of pres\u00adsure and 400\u00b0 of heat.<\/p>\n

The met\u00adal plate has a translu\u00adcent coat\u00ading on it which gives the print its back\u00adlit effect. The spe\u00adcial ink under pres\u00adsure and heat goes from a sol\u00adid to a gas bypass\u00ading the liq\u00aduid state (sub\u00adli\u00adma\u00adtion). The gas pen\u00ade\u00adtrates the coat\u00ading and fus\u00ades direct\u00adly with the met\u00adal leav\u00ading the translu\u00adcent coat\u00ading on top. Then they cool, trim, and smooth the edges of the plate. They attach a mount\u00ading appa\u00adra\u00adtus to the back with adhe\u00adsive. The print is ready to be shipped.<\/p>\n

Magna Chrome invent\u00aded this process sev\u00aden years ago. It has sup\u00adplied the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and designed and built the heat press\u00ades for sev\u00ader\u00adal large nation\u00adal full-ser\u00advice pho\u00adto ser\u00advices. Magna Chrome itself remains small and spe\u00adcial\u00adizes in just met\u00adal prints. Because Magna Chrome is small, it prides itself on the extra care it takes in mak\u00ading met\u00adal prints.<\/p>\n

Besides being beau\u00adti\u00adful the met\u00adal prints have an archival life of 330 years so long as they are kept out of direct sun\u00adlight. In addi\u00adtion, you can clean off the sur\u00adface using alco\u00adhol. For that rea\u00adson, hos\u00adpi\u00adtals are using a lot of met\u00adal prints because they can clean them reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly for hygien\u00adic purposes.<\/p>\n

I like met\u00adal prints because their cost is low\u00ader than hav\u00ading a pho\u00adto print\u00aded on paper and then cus\u00adtom framed. Even with ready-made off-the-shelf frames, the met\u00adal prints are com\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adble in cost but less trou\u00adble. How\u00adev\u00ader, none of this would make any dif\u00adfer\u00adence if the met\u00adal prints did\u00adn\u2019t look so good. They are high res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion and dazzling.<\/p>\n

In my opin\u00adion, framed prints and met\u00adal prints don\u2019t mix well on the same wall. But in a room with just met\u00adal prints, the met\u00adal prints look nat\u00adur\u00adal and a nat\u00adur\u00adal part of the room.<\/p>\n

Bay Pho\u00adto even goes so far as to pro\u00advide dig\u00adi\u00adtal edges and dig\u00adi\u00adtal frames that you can choose to make part of the pho\u00adto\u00adgraph so as to give the effect of being framed on the wall. Indeed, I saw met\u00adal prints in a down\u00adtown San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco gallery that had such a fram\u00ading effect, and they looked pret\u00adty good.<\/p>\n

All in all, this is a dra\u00admat\u00adic new way to dis\u00adplay pho\u00adtos. I expect these met\u00adal prints to become com\u00admon\u00adplace in the next few years. Give met\u00adal a try!<\/p>\n
