I vis\u00adit\u00aded a phone cam\u00adera pho\u00adto exhib\u00adit at a small caf\u00e9 in Napa, Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia. It showed off five pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphers all of whom were good, and I enjoyed the exhib\u00adit which fea\u00adtured about three dozen pho\u00adtos. I was struck, how\u00adev\u00ader, by the mes\u00adsage that the exhib\u00adit sent.<\/p>\n

The largest pho\u00adtos were 8\u2033 x 8\u2033. Most of the pho\u00adtos were 4\u2033 x 4\u2033. I inter\u00adpret\u00aded the exhib\u00adit to be say\u00ading, you can\u00adnot expect to get large high-res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion prints out of a phone cam\u00adera, so this exhib\u00adit has to fea\u00adture small prints.<\/p>\n

What a na\u00efve mes\u00adsage! A 10-megapix\u00adel (MP<\/span>) dig\u00adi\u00adtal cam\u00adera is the equiv\u00ada\u00adlent of 35mm film. Pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphers rou\u00adtine\u00adly used 35mm film to pro\u00adduce high-res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion prints that were as large as 30\u2033 x 40\u2033. The pho\u00adtos in the exhib\u00adit pre\u00adsum\u00adably were tak\u00aden dur\u00ading an era when phone cam\u00aderas typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly had 5 MPs or more. To think that you can\u2019t make good prints big\u00adger than 8\u201d x 8\u201d with 5 MPs assumes a dis\u00adtinct lack of post-pro\u00adcess\u00ading skill.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what the rea\u00adson was for the small prints. Per\u00adhaps the pho\u00adtos were tak\u00aden at the dawn of phone cam\u00aderas a few years before the exhib\u00adit when the typ\u00adi\u00adcal phone cam\u00adera had only 2 or 3 MPs. Today things are dif\u00adfer\u00adent, how\u00adev\u00ader. Many phone cam\u00aderas have between 10 and 20 MPs, and some phone cam\u00adera sev\u00ader\u00adal years old have between 8 and 12 MPs. Even with 5 MPs you can get a sharp print as large as 12\u201d x 16\u201d assum\u00ading you took a sharp pho\u00adto and did some post-processing.<\/p>\n

The point to be made is that there is no longer any small\u00adness to phone cam\u00adera pho\u00adtos. Phone cam\u00aderas are per\u00adfect\u00adly capa\u00adble of tak\u00ading pho\u00adtos that can be made into large sharp prints.<\/p>\n

You do need to keep in mind that most pho\u00adtos require post pro\u00adcess\u00ading and in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar sharp\u00aden\u00ading. You\u2019re not like\u00adly to get many good prints from pho\u00adtos that have not been processed. Then too, dif\u00adfer\u00adent phone cam\u00aderas have dif\u00adfer\u00adent capa\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties; that is, they pro\u00adduce pho\u00adtos of dif\u00adfer\u00adent qual\u00adi\u00adty. Although many phone cam\u00aderas have astound\u00ading\u00adly high qual\u00adi\u00adty today, some don\u2019t. In addi\u00adtion, cam\u00aderas with small sen\u00adsors, such as phone cam\u00aderas, have dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty tak\u00ading sharp pic\u00adtures in low light. Nonethe\u00adless, phone cam\u00aderas are seri\u00adous pho\u00adto\u00adgraph\u00adic instru\u00adments today.<\/p>\n

With the above in mind, go for it. Don\u2019t be afraid to use your 8+ MP<\/span> phone cam\u00adera pho\u00adtos to make large sharp prints. But before you make any prints of any size, learn to do some basic post pro\u00adcess\u00ading, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly sharpening.<\/p>\n
