Dri\u00adving long dis\u00adtances has its haz\u00adards. One of them is fatigue. As we all know, get\u00adting out of the car, stretch\u00ading, and tak\u00ading a break helps avoid the kind of fatigue that is like\u00adly to cause an accident.<\/p>\n

Yet in my expe\u00adri\u00adence, it seems dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to stop to take the breaks that one should take. I\u2019m always eager to get on to the des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion of the day, and tak\u00ading a break does\u00adn\u2019t seem to fur\u00adther that goal.<\/p>\n

At the same time, as you dri\u00adve, you see mul\u00adti\u00adple pho\u00adto ops go by. As I hur\u00adry to get to my des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion of the day, I ratio\u00adnal\u00adize that the next time I dri\u00adve this way I will sched\u00adule some extra time to stop and take advan\u00adtage of the pho\u00adto ops. The prob\u00adlem with that sort of think\u00ading is that often there is no next time on that par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar route. You miss the pho\u00adto ops forever.<\/p>\n

Even if you were to sched\u00adule a rest stop every hour, that would prove to be imprac\u00adti\u00adcal. It will be time to stop, and you won\u2019t be at an appro\u00adpri\u00adate place. An appro\u00adpri\u00adate place might be a des\u00adig\u00adnat\u00aded over\u00adlook or view\u00adpoint, a rest area, a fast food eatery, a con\u00adve\u00adnience store, or some oth\u00ader safe place. Thus, your inten\u00adtion stop once every hour would end up stop\u00adping at the end of 50 min\u00adutes one time, at the end of one hour and 40 min\u00adutes anoth\u00ader time, etc.<\/p>\n

Instead, why not stop for the pho\u00adto ops. Pho\u00adto ops will not come exact\u00adly every hour; they will doubtless\u00adly come ran\u00addom\u00adly. Nonethe\u00adless, ran\u00addom stops are bet\u00adter than not stop\u00adping at all, and it seems clear that reg\u00adu\u00adlar stops are more like\u00adly to be ran\u00addom stops anyway.<\/p>\n

Have your cam\u00adera ready. Stop for the pho\u00adto op. Get out of the car. Walk to the best place to get the best shoot\u00ading angle for the pho\u00adto op. Take enough shots to make sure you have a good selec\u00adtion from which to choose a good pho\u00adto\u00adgraph. Get a can of Coca-Cola out of your cool\u00ader. And start dri\u00adving again. That makes a pret\u00adty good break.<\/p>\n

Not only will you have a safer trip, but you will also end up with pho\u00adtos that are ones you can\u2019t get at home. There is always some\u00adthing. Unusu\u00adal ter\u00adrain. An old barn. An inter\u00adest\u00ading high\u00adway sign, adver\u00adtis\u00ading sign, or one of the many oth\u00ader unusu\u00adal signs that one is like\u00adly to see on a long trip. An inter\u00adest\u00ading vehi\u00adcle, boat, loco\u00admo\u00adtive, truck, or air\u00adplane. An inter\u00adest\u00ading build\u00ading, old or new. A lake, riv\u00ader, seashore, or moun\u00adtain view. And even inter\u00adest\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adters along the way.<\/p>\n

And you can do it. Why? Because you have your phone with you. And your phone includes a per\u00adfect\u00adly com\u00adpe\u00adtent camera.<\/p>\n

Dri\u00adve safe\u00adly and take some inter\u00adest\u00ading photos.<\/p>\n

P.S. Yes, I did dri\u00adve through both Eure\u00adka, Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia and Eure\u00adka, Neva\u00adda this spring.<\/p>\n
