When I decid\u00aded to do a blog on phone cam\u00adera pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy, I thought, I need to get out and do more shoot\u00ading. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, I\u2019m not a soli\u00adtary per\u00adson, and I don\u2019t like to do things by myself. I have sev\u00ader\u00adal friends who are pro pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphers, but they like to work alone. I\u2019ve nev\u00ader had much luck in talk\u00ading them into let\u00adting me go out shoot\u00ading with them. As for the remain\u00adder of my friends and fam\u00adi\u00adly, they don\u2019t seem to have any inter\u00adest in going out shoot\u00ading pho\u00adtographs just to shoot photographs.<\/p>\n

So I decid\u00aded to join a pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy club. The clos\u00adest is the Napa Val\u00adley Pho\u00adto\u00adgraph\u00adic Soci\u00adety. This is a group of ama\u00adteur pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphers and pros, as well as artists using pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy, is their medi\u00adum. This club has a spe\u00adcial sec\u00adtion which goes out and shoots as a group. It looked very promis\u00ading for oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties to go out and shoot more.<\/p>\n

In the first meet\u00ading that I attend\u00aded, the club had a dis\u00adplay. Some peo\u00adple brought in their prints and showed them to the rest of the group. I noticed that my favorite out of about 30 prints was a 16 x 20 of a rust\u00aded steel indus\u00adtri\u00adal part. To my sur\u00adprise, the artist had tak\u00aden the pho\u00adto with her phone cam\u00adera. It was quite an attrac\u00adtive pho\u00adto\u00adgraph and very sharp. I thought to myself, I\u2019m in the right place.<\/p>\n

At that club meet\u00ading, the call went out for con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions to a month-long exhib\u00adit the Soci\u00adety had sched\u00aduled at the Napa Library. There was no selec\u00adtion process. The first 34 peo\u00adple that com\u00admit\u00adted to enter\u00ading pho\u00adtos were to be the exhibitors at the exhib\u00adit. I decid\u00aded, why not? At the next month\u2019s meet\u00ading, every\u00adone brought two of their prints in for the group to decide which one print would go into the exhibit.<\/p>\n

Before the next meet\u00ading, I took two of my phone cam\u00adera pho\u00adtos and had them print\u00aded at Cost\u00adco. One was 11 x 14 and the oth\u00ader 16 x 20. The total price for the two was under $10, and the pho\u00adtos were beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly print\u00aded. Got two nice wood\u00aden frames on sale at Michaels for under $40 total. I took them to the next club meet\u00ading for the group to decide which one would go into the Napa Library exhibit.<\/p>\n

The club chose a pho\u00adto of a sun\u00adset I had tak\u00aden while out hik\u00ading. Had I not had my phone with me, I would\u2019ve missed this pho\u00adto\u00adgraph com\u00adplete\u00adly. It may not be the best pho\u00adto\u00adgraph ever tak\u00aden, but it held its own with the oth\u00ader pho\u00adtographs in the exhibit\u2014except for sev\u00ader\u00adal that were of high artis\u00adtic value.<\/p>\n

It was the first time and prob\u00ada\u00adbly the last that I would ever be on exhib\u00adit as a artist. To top it all off, the library had a recep\u00adtion for us artists. They served fine wine (as you might expect) and very good cheese. About 80 peo\u00adple attend\u00aded. It was great fun.<\/p>\n

The first field trip was not in the field but rather in a stu\u00addio. We gath\u00adered togeth\u00ader on Sat\u00adur\u00adday morn\u00ading to do micro pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy (close-ups). The actu\u00adal shoot\u00ading ses\u00adsion turned out to be not only close-ups but also tak\u00ading pho\u00adtographs of objects. With about a dozen mem\u00adbers attend\u00ading, we learned from each oth\u00ader and shot each other\u2019s props.<\/p>\n

I used both my phone cam\u00adera and my 3\u2011pound pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal cam\u00adera. My smart phone is the Sam\u00adsung Galaxy S3<\/span>, which has a good 8MP<\/span> cam\u00adera. My 3\u2011pound pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal cam\u00adera is a Sony A55<\/span>, 16MP<\/span>, with a 50mm F2<\/span> .8 macro lens.<\/p>\n

Amaz\u00ading as it seems, the results for the two cam\u00aderas were dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to tell apart. Although the rose pho\u00adtos (the first pho\u00adtos above in this arti\u00adcle) are not direct com\u00adpar\u00adisons, they\u2019re close enough for you to tell that my phone cam\u00adera is not nec\u00ades\u00adsar\u00adi\u00adly some half-baked add-on to the phone. Cer\u00adtain cell phones have excel\u00adlent cam\u00aderas. And the S3<\/span> is no lag\u00adgard. The S3<\/span> pho\u00adto is the sec\u00adond pho\u00adto of the ros\u00ades above.<\/p>\n

There are pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy clubs all over the coun\u00adtry. If you live in a city of any size at all, you may find two or three pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy clubs to join. You\u2019ll find peo\u00adple to go around and shoot with, peo\u00adple to learn from, and peo\u00adple to have fun with. I\u2019ve already learned things from oth\u00ader club mem\u00adbers about pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy, things I may have nev\u00ader learned otherwise.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all about tak\u00ading pic\u00adtures. Bet\u00adter! The best way to take bet\u00adter pho\u00adtos is to get out and prac\u00adtice. And the best way to prac\u00adtice is to get out and shoot with peo\u00adple who know some tech\u00adniques that you don\u2019t. Thus, I high\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend that if you are inter\u00adest\u00aded in tak\u00ading bet\u00adter pho\u00adtos, join a pho\u00adto club and get out and shoot pho\u00adtos with oth\u00ader club mem\u00adbers. It\u2019s a great way to make progress and have fun too.<\/p>\n
