Do you ever ask your\u00adself, how do pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphers get bet\u00adter pho\u00adtos than me? I do. One answer is sur\u00adpris\u00ading. They sim\u00adply take more pho\u00adtos. I can remem\u00adber back in the days of film going out shoot\u00ading with a pro. I would take one long roll of film and come home with 36 shots. My pro com\u00adpan\u00adion would take six rolls and come home with 216 shots. Did he get bet\u00adter pho\u00adtos? Sure. He had a sta\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcal advan\u00adtage of six to one. Sta\u00adtis\u00adtics aren\u2019t every\u00adthing, but a six to one ratio is nonethe\u00adless a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant advantage.<\/p>\n

The cost of the film was a con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion. You had to have a lot of con\u00adfi\u00addence that you would get some great shots in order to jus\u00adti\u00adfy the expense of six rolls instead one. Gen\u00ader\u00adous shoot\u00ading just wasn\u2019t part of an amateur\u2019s nor\u00admal repertoire.<\/p>\n

Today we have no excuse. We can improve our pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy a lot just by tak\u00ading more pho\u00adtos. Lots more. Mem\u00ado\u00adry is cheap, and that\u2019s what\u2019s required to take a lot of pho\u00adtos. Most smart\u00adphones come with plen\u00adty of mem\u00ado\u00adry for pho\u00adtos, unless you load up your phone with music. Many phones also come with a slot to add a mem\u00ado\u00adry card to increase your mem\u00ado\u00adry for both pho\u00adtos and music.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the only good shot I took of nine that were almost identical.<\/p>\n

A pro might have tak\u00aden two or three times as many shots and got\u00adten a bet\u00adter photo.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t blame a dearth of great pho\u00adtos on your phone cam\u00adera. Your phone cam\u00adera has as much (or more) pho\u00adto\u00adgraph\u00adic pow\u00ader as pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal dig\u00adi\u00adtal cam\u00aderas of just ten years ago. And pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals got great pho\u00adtos then. Shoot a lot, and you\u2019ll get great pho\u00adtos now.<\/p>\n

When you go out shoot\u00ading, take a moment at the site to plan ahead to get plen\u00adty of shots in order to thor\u00adough\u00adly cov\u00ader the pho\u00adto op. Then start shoot\u00ading. Shoot until you cov\u00ader all the angles (lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly). Take your time. Don\u2019t walk away until you\u2019re satisfied.<\/p>\n

Of course, using this tech\u00adnique does take some fore\u00adthought. You need to upload your pho\u00adtos from your phone to your com\u00adput\u00ader, tablet, or stor\u00adage device at the end of each shoot\u00ading ses\u00adsion (e.g., at the end of the day). Make it a habit to do this so you can shoot up a lot of pho\u00adtos each day with\u00adout ever run\u00adning out of memory.<\/p>\n

Lots of shots also ampli\u00adfy anoth\u00ader great tech\u00adnique: the sec\u00adond look<\/i>. Many times I\u2019ve gone through all the pho\u00adtos I\u2019ve tak\u00aden for the day and picked out the best shots. A week, a month, or even a year lat\u00ader I\u2019ve gone through a sec\u00adond time to dis\u00adcov\u00ader I\u2019ve missed a good shot the first time around. If you take a lot of pho\u00adtos, this pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty is much greater than if you take just a few pho\u00adtos. And I\u2019ve found a sec\u00adond look to be con\u00adsis\u00adtent\u00adly productive.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a sec\u00adond-look shot that I think is inter\u00adest\u00ading. Dis\u00adcov\u00adered it about a year after I took it.<\/p>\n

In addi\u00adtion, keep WYSIWYG<\/span> (what you see is what you got<\/i>) in mind. You can check your pho\u00adtos on the screen of your phone to deter\u00admine whether you got the pho\u00adto you want\u00aded. Couldn\u2019t do that with film. Take advan\u00adtage of this remark\u00adable tech\u00adnique. You can not only take plen\u00adty of shots, but you can also check to see that you got a good group of shots from which to pick a great pho\u00adto later.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s one shot of four in low light at sun\u00adset that turned out to be worth keep\u00ading. The first shot is blur\u00adry and caught some\u00adone\u2019s phone. The sec\u00adond shows the gui\u00adtar play\u00ader\u2019s head blurred. Anoth\u00ader (not shown) had some blur in it too.The last shot (third below) is OK<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Take four instead of one. More is bet\u00adter. Had I tak\u00aden only one, I would have missed get\u00adting a usable photo.<\/p>\n

Hey, shoot\u00ading lots of pho\u00adtos is just more fun. Some\u00adthing about unre\u00adstrained shoot\u00ading brings more sat\u00adis\u00adfac\u00adtion. With expe\u00adri\u00adence, you also devel\u00adop the con\u00adfi\u00addence that you\u2019re going to be more suc\u00adcess\u00adful (in get\u00adting good photos).<\/p>\n

The nice thing about phone cam\u00aderas is that the unfet\u00adtered pho\u00adto shoot is always avail\u00adable to you on a moment\u2019s notice. When that pho\u00adto op comes along, pull out your phone and start shoot\u00ading. Let no killer pho\u00adto escape.<\/p>\n
